“Yuzen-zome” the textile dyeing representing Japanese style , is said to be established by Mr. Yuzensai Miyazaki, a drawer in Kyoto in Teikyo era (1684-1687). Edo-Yuzen is very unique in its one-color and urbane design in various styles of Yuzen.
Mr. Ide has been engaged in “Itome-Yuzen” which uses “Itome”. “Itome-Yuzen” is the style based on the traditional one of “Tokyo-Yuzen (Edo-Yuzen) which uses “Itome (outline of pattern), tapping, gold-lacquer in simple design and limited number of colors but adopting modern feeling. Designs are mostly on pine-tree, waves or imperial palace. All of the craftsmen engaged in this dying in Tokyo are the professionals with apprenticeship for many years. They have been making best efforts to transmit the Japanese traditional culture “Kimono” to future generations though they recently have had the difficulties to find and grow successors.

Hideyo Ide
Hideyo Ide, born in 1950
He had been under the apprenticeship with Mr. Mitsugi Yamada (holder of National important intangible cultural heritage) for one year’s live-in and thereafter nine years’ live-out training since he was 18 years old. He has been engaged only in “Itome-Yuzen” which uses glue for outline of the pattern. He won a prize at the “Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition” in 1992 for the first time. He had joined the art crafts preservation project by the Japan Art Crafts Association “Restoration of Chayazome Katabira (hemp garment by indigo dyeing)” in 1981 and 1990, and special display at the “Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition” in 1989 and 1996.
He has been accredited for the registered intangible cultural heritage in Arakawa ward, Tokyo in 2002.
